We should of traded Ryan last summer. Good guy but 7.2m is too much against the cap. Guy can't skate at that level and he's got so many years. Unless they bring in the best skating coach in the world and he finds his legs again, that's the biggest thing bothering me.

He has had a lot more jump in his game the last two outings, which is positive, but if the trend he has shown in his previous years of slowing down in the second half of the season continues, then it will be a long three months ahead, not to mention the next 5 years because the bar to slow down from is pretty low right now.

I don't see Ryan sticking around after this season. I know it's hard to think of for our club, but if Ryan doesn't pick it up I foresee a Vegas grab with retention of salary, or a buy-out. It's just way too much money for someone of his calibre right now. I can't believe how bad he's looked out there; I had such high hopes for him but something is missing.

Did Ryan get any sort of NTC/NMC on this contract? His trade value/market will be limited at best.

If the Leafs can find someone to take Phaneuf off their hands....

NMC to minor that's it. he's free to ship anywhere. Booby's problem is conditioning. He's not training at all in summer vacation. Its so clear each year when season starts...look at the pictures of training camp. His body is just like an average joe working at the government : little belly, no bicep, tricep, back and chest is thin...I'm bigger than this man. Hell look at Karlsson...he's a monster when he comes back. So is Turris cheessus.

Bobby workout is close to non existant.

If I was Dorion, I wouldn't move him. I woul dgive him one more summer and ask him to work all summer with Schwatz on conditioning and strength...and with that girl who trained Stone to skate...can't remember her name.

If he comes back the same at training camp...you're out

At that point the question becomes who would take him? He must be a top 5 worst contract in the l league at this point?

I've heard of teams enticing the expansion teams not to take players, how about paying them to pick him?

Would an expansion team have trouble making the floor perhaps? Although If so I would imagine there are plenty of garbage contracts to pick from

He's also signed until 35 years old which might be a tough sell

If Ottawa were to pick up half his contract, Ryan would still cost $3.5M a year. Given his current production, he's just barely playing to a $3.5M salary production-wise . He is also a negative in terms of overall intangibles. And the trend in overall performance is not great. Yes, one could hope for a positive improvement with a change of scenery but not a bet that Las Vegas would want to take.

My money is on Bobby Ryan being in Ottawa for the rest of his career (which is whatever is left on his current contract)...

Ryan is a tricky case. I still would have made the trade for him every time. I also think the deal to keep him wasn't that bad at the time. It's the going rate for a top 3 forward.

He's had a brutal start this year and he has yet to really generate the production everyone thought he was capable of when he was brought in. So of course he is the new "whipping boy" if you will.

There was never a "good time" to trade away Ryan. He either had an expiring contract or is on this long term deal. The only way he moves is if a bad contract comes back in return, which is entirely possible.

I do enjoy the sentiment around the hockey water coolers that Las Vegas is just going to take every bad contract teams make available. They are likely to take a couple to get to the cap floor, but they won't be bringing in a bad contract from every team. I would not rely on that.

Personally, I've been disappointed in Ryan. I thought he was going to be legit. I nominated him as the new captain back in the day. I was certainly wrong about that. With that said, I think it's a mistake to give up on him right now. He's played better since his benching. Maybe he turns a corner. I'd give him until the trade deadline to get a real sense of where he is at. There's no rush to get him out of here. There isn't anyone lining up to get him. May as well work with what you have. If he can get back up to a 60 point player, then that's worth keeping in my mind.

Ottawa now has 23 wins to Toronto's 21 with both on 50 points. Can someone please explain to me why we're listed behind them in the standings?

First tie breaker is regulation and OT wins. They both have 20. I'm not sure what second tiebreaker is

Random thought: if they are good with lazar playing and adding nothing offensively, maybe this opens the door for Borowiecki to move to wing in the future?

We are all a little guilty of overrating Bobby Ryan. When with Anaheim, we would only see highlights and see the odd "highlight reel" goal. Once you get a good look at him, he is what he is;a offensive zone face circle in player with some nifty hands. Seldom pays the price you have to now. Game has changed since his big years on the west coast and is not as insulated (Perry/ Getzlaf).
The red flag with him that despite the salary, never seems to be as good as shape as he should be. Perhaps if waived his NT/NMC Vegas might take him. If not you are probably stuck with him. Dorion doesan't seem bright enough to me to get creative with a trade.
